07 GRADINGS

1. What is the name of the Founder of Judo?
Dr Jigoro Kano.
2. What does Judo mean?
The Gentle (or Supple) Way.
3. What is the name for your instructor or teacher?
Sensei.
4. What is the difference between a Za Rei and a Ritsu Rei?
Za Rei is a kneeling bow, Ritsu Rei is a standing bow.
5. How do we submit?
Tapping the opponent or floor with the hand, foot or by calling Maitta.
6. How should we behave in the Dojo?
Sensibly.
7. What does Osae Komi mean?
Hold down secured and the timer has started.
8. How many points are awarded for the following: Ippon, Waza-ari, Yuko, Koka?
10, 7, 5, 3.
9. How should we apply an arm-lock, choke or strangle?
Safely, slowly and with care.
10. What is the correct way of sitting on the mat?
Kneeling or sitting cross legged
11. How should we treat other judoka?
With respect.
12. Who founded the BJC?
Kenshiro Abbe.
13. What is Kamiza?
The honoured place in the Dojo, usually opposite the entrance (on the left hand wall of our Dojo) and may contain a photo of the founder etc.
14. What is Randori?
Free practice.
15. Where would you wear your obi?
Around your waist, its the judo belt.
16. What is the word for breaking balance?
Kuzushi.
17. What is the difference between Jigotai and Shizentai?
Jigotai is the rigid defensive posture,  Shizentai is the relaxed posture.
18. What is the Kyu Shin Do?
Kyu Shin Do was the philosophy of Kenshiro Abbe and is the way in which Judo has been handed on to us.
19. The following are all essential parts of judo technique; what do they mean? Kuzushi, Tsukuri, Tai Sabaki, Kake
Breaking the balance, 'floating' your opponent or creating the opportunity, body movement (turning in to attack or to avoid an attack), completing the technique.
20. On the contest mat, what does the red area represent?
It is the safety area - it indicates that the competitiors are becoming close to the edge of the mat.
