What a fabulous weekend of Judo for the Club, starting with Tony Leroux grabbing a Bronze mnedal at the London Area 2009 British Masters Championships on Saturday 3rd October, fighting in a pool with 3rd and 4th Dans, well done Tony.
Then on Sunday 4th October, 15 members of the club (yes I did say 15), travelled down to Essex for the Tsu-mo-kie open competition. You can see who got what in the table below. I have to add best wishes to Morris on a speedy recovery after dislocating his shoulder (the same shoulder he dislocated at the same event last year, how unlucky is that!).

Easter Closure Dates
The Woughton centre is closed on bank holidays so there will be no Judo on the following Dates
Friday 10th April 2009
Monday 13th April 2009.
A busy 1st quarter has been had by the club, and best to keep you all informed as to how we have been doing!!!
The competition season is now in full swing, although there is a little break now for some. (Sorry Geoff!!).....
The year started off with squad training for a few of us, all holding our own in particular our very own globe trotter Jason who walked the bleep test without even trying!!
In Feb Gareth Fenton continued his come back into competing again following his knee injury at the NHC Veterans in High Wycombe,, with a spirited display which included pushing a 5th dan Gareth battled through to take a well deserved BRONZE- the first medal for the club this year.
The following weekend was the area grading, this time was held at our very own Woughton LC.. A good turn out from all the juniors and primarys which led to everyone earning a promotion on the day, too many names to mention, although will mention little Liam Mcgarr who was the only senior to grade from the club, Liam is now a yellow belt-assuming they come in his size!!
March was the busiest month so far of the year with no less than 4 events that the club attended.. First up was National squad training again, where a few of us were put through our paces on a Sunday of all days!!!! Again all attendees acquited themselves extremely well and no one looked out of place, although we need to teach Mariusz the rules of the bleep test!!
The following weekend saw a split in the destinations of the seniors with 2 events being attended.
First up was the National Grade and Vets, this year being held in High Wycombe Judo Centre, I am led to believe that this was the first BJC event ever to be held there. With the club taking our very own coaches down to witness it!! Steve took his Gi with him, but a limited entry of one led to the Vets being scrapped so no fighting for him!! Tony was fighting in the 2nd dan section and despite winning his first 2 fights tiredness took its toll and then lost the next 2.. However a well earned BRONZE in the bag.. This left Geoff being the last to compete in the kyu grades.. Despite everyones best attempts to beat him Geoff walked his way past the first 4 fights to gain a semi final berth.. His opponent did not fancy this battle and pulled out with a "shoulder" injury leaving Geoff into the final.. This match lasted all of 15 seconds before Geoff dispatched the young fella with what is now his trade mark Hari-Goshi... GOLD for Geoff and a promotion to BLUE belt on the day!!
Whilst we were at High Wycombe, Gareth Fenton was again on the road fighting in the Ipswich Open.. Again Gareth found himself up against a fifth dan, however this time round Gareth pushed him all the way losing out on a minor score in the end... Despite this Gareth battled on and Secured his second medal of the year. BRONZE.
The last event of the month was last weekend up in Kidderminster where it was the Samurai Kyu Grades open.. Due to other commitments the club was represented by only 2 members... Geoff lost enough weight and managed to make the U81kg catagory.. After a lengthy delay his first fight started.. Despite looking in control an unfortunate fall to the ground led to a break of the elbow, leaving Geoff no option but to pull out... This has since meant that he will be out of action for up to 6 weeks.. WE ALL WISH YOU A SPEEDY RECOVERY..
The final section of the day was the ladies kyu grades. Our entry was Mel Pell. The entry in her section was 5 so this meant a round robin pool was to be held.. Unkown to Mel at the time the break down was 2 Green belts and 3 brown belts! First up was the green belt, although a yuko down Mel turned on the ground work and secured her first victory of the day.. Next up and Mel dropped her opponent in a little under 4 seconds, taking a Ko-soto-Gari at the same time as gripping up!!!! Her third fight was going the way as the first, a yuko down, then a big hari goshi and straight into kesa gatame led to the victory... Last fiht of the day and Mel had to fight a member of the GB Masters squad,, Mel was not fazed though and dropped a nice tani-othosi to secure the win.. GOLD.
So all in all a good start to the year, 2 golds and 3 bronzes!!
April is now upon us and is a quiet month with the exception of the Charity day on the 26th.. Please all support this as best as you can by either attending, making a donation (either time wise or of course money!) Its a great opportunity to show the club in a really good light!

He is currently studying a B.Sc in Sports Science with the ambition to teach sports to deaf children. As a result of his sheer determination to succeed he has established himself as a highly respected sportsman, Fulham Deaf FC Midfielder and Vice Captain. Hes also Craigs Nephew!
He has 21 international Caps, and has a Silver medal from the 6th European Deaf Football international Championships in Portugal 2007. In 2005 The British Team took Gold at the Deaflympics in Australia.

Why Does He Need Our Help? For the second time in his career, Ben has been selected to join the Great Britain Deaf Football Team at the 2009 Deaflympics in Taiwan.
Unfortunately, British Deaf Football gets no government funding and Ben and His teammates have to raise their own funds in order to compete. He needs to raise £3000.00.
When we heard about this at Kitsune-gari,we wondered if there was any way we could help Ben out. Here is an opportunity for us as Judoka to demonstrate our core values of mutual welfare and benefit by doing what we do best throwing each other around a dojo! On April 26th we will be staging an Open Randori to raise money to help Ben on his way. We are asking for as many of you as possible to attend and for the Juniors and Primaries to help with a sponsored Ukemi.
For Non-Judoka there will be the opportunity to Have a go at a Throw , a prize raffle and refreshments available throughout the day.
We Need Your Support
As well as helping out another sportsman we hope this will draw attention to Judo in Milton Keynes and, not least, our club so please give as much support to this event as you can manage.
For a full programme / flyer or sponsorship forms please download the pdf documents. If you can help in anyway e.g. running the refreshment bar, registration desk, mat official for the sponsored ukemi, donation of raffle prizes please see Craig at the Club or phone him /e-mail him.
We want this to be as much fun as possible as well as helping a good cause.
16-12-2008 : Seniors Christmas Do : Woughton Centre
An Event not to be missed!!! See Gary, Steve or Craig for Details.....
16-11-2008 : Senior National Championships
An early start was required by most to get to Hereford for the 9am weigh in. As usual with competitions this did not seem to close till about 11 so could have left later!! Never mind though it gave people chance to get some food into their tummies!!
The day started slowly with the espoirs turning out first, with no one in this event for the club to be honest I did not really watch too much of this so have no idea if the standard was very good.
Anyhow, at about midday it all started to kick off for team KG (Thanks for the term Craig-take it its not copyright protected yet!). First up was young Mr. Potter- straight out of the one week training regime that he put himself through.... Jamie made a solid start winning his first fight quickly with a wazari awasete ippon.
At the same time it was a race down to mat 1 where Mariusz was making his debut... some solid grip work led to a good opportunity on the ground, however rather than out on the hold down Mariusz decided to go for the arm lock- at which point both Ant and myself got told off by the refs for coaching (oops!). Eventually Mariusz got another chance of a lock and managed to get the submission.
By this time Jamie was back on the mat!! (Think this running around was called a warm up for me!) Jamie decided that his fitness was not going to last though and quickly dumped his opponent, by which time it was a race to go and see Geoff back on mat one... After trying all of his power in the air Geoff had to settle for a little strangle.
Another solid win for both the heavy kyu grades put them through the pools and into the semis.
Mr. Potter was also into the semis at this point - However despite trying all of the techniques in his armoury, Jamie lost out to a solid wazari- putting him into the repechage and one last push for a bronze - despite being a score down Jamie kept on believing in himself and with a deft touch managed to get a nice ushiro kesa gatame on as the clock was ticking down. Despite the best efforts of his opposite number to get out, Jamies blubber did the trick and secured the first result of the day - BRONZEKyu grades -81s
Back up to the big guys and both Geoff and Mariusz battered their opponents in the semis- Mariusz with another arm lock, Geoff with a throw (missed it sorry!). This set up an all club final!!!! After a hectic start it was clear one of them was going to get a huge throw in... The honour went to Geoff with his trademark hip slip O-goshi finally settling it, fair play to Mariusz for jumping though!! So, GOLD and SILVER in the kyu grades under 90's.
Without pausing to congratulate the guys it was the time of the fairer sex - Both Leah and Mel were entered into the kyu grades -70's. However a limited entry of three led to this being combined with another weight group. First up was Leah - despite the best efforts to keep away from her very classy opponent eventually Leah got caught. This bought up The Old Lady - a ding dong battle to start with, Koka scored against and then full time. This put both the girls into the bottom of the pool and facing an uphill battle... Personally I blame the bacon baps they had consumed for breakfast - Not seen so much grease since Garys licence picture!! Despite this they both battled on - unfortunately though, losing out in both the next two fights. Mel losing on a debatable decision. This set up the final fight for the bronze - Club vs Club again...... Mel getting the kesa gatame on for the win BRONZE - Ladies U70s kyu grades.
With the kyu grades just about finished it is also worth mentioning that Shiai (old school) also had a team entered, Chris Mobbs rolling back the years to pick up silver in the Mens - 100 event.
So onto the Dan grades, with no pressure being put on Paul and myself following the results of the morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As so always happens both of us were on the mat at the same time, so Paul, Im sorry if your write up is smaller!! Paul got GOLD - Dan grades - 90s, four fights, four ippons and a good array of techniques.
This brings me on to me - Indulgence time!!! With a point to prove to all the youngsters in the crowd, I quickly took my mind of them by removing my glasses!! First fighter was quickly despatched with a good old fashioned de-ashi-barai in about 20 seconds, I think. Bout 2 started a little harder, a little stronger and younger this fella, However finally outfoxed him and a neat O-soto-gake put him out of his misery - although he did not take it too well and refused to talk to anyone for the rest of the day... This set me up for the next fight against a fellow from Luton - who had also won his first 2 (Pool of 5).. Having fought him at the Masters in September and taking 10 points off him I knew what we was in for. Those that know me know that I have a 3 minute rule - Throw or be thrown in that time!! In a good natured battle I finally got the breakthrough after 2 1/2 minutes of tactical battling - a little te-guruma threat scored for a yuko - despite both of us players being shocked that it was only that.... So leaving 1.25 on the clock it was up to him to come forward. Mistake, as I caught him with ko-soto gari for ippon (same as before!). Last fight against someone who had lost all day meant that no matter what the gold was in the bag. A couple of Te-Gurumas later and ippon was scored. 4 fights, 4 wins and all on different throws!! GOLD - Dan grades -73s.
So medal count for the day was up to 6 with 2 bronze, a silver and 3 gold. A very pleasing day, not just for the result but also the etiquette of our players both on and off the mat - I did not catch anyone not bowing in and out of the hall, basic stuff that makes a difference. It was also pleasing that comments were made about the club name being back up there, a testament to those from the past and those that work so hard in the present!

09-11-2008 : White Horse Judo Club Open Championships
Having Weighed in at 09:30 Aimee and Christopher had an extremely long wait until finally taking to the mat at 1:45 pm, so it was all the more pleasing when Aimee Threw and held both her opponents to pick up the Gold medal in her weight group. Christopher, having smashed his toe into the stair wall that morning managed a creditable Bronze. Shaun had the longest wait of all finishing at 4:45 pm, but despite the wait he fought his way to a bronze medal in a pool of 7 competitiors, the Gold and Silver going to a Blue belt and Green belt.

Then in the 2nd dan event Gareth had to pulll out with bad ribs whilst Tony got through the pools and then lost in the semi for the bronze but picked up 60 points on the day for his 3rd dan!

09-03-2008 : National Grade & Vets competition - Leicester
After being diverted to another venue due to an air conditioning unit crashing to the floor in the main hall at Aylestone, I arrived at the Braunstone Leisure Centre to watch our team of seniors compete in the National Grade & Vets Competition. The Seniors had a good outing to Leicester today, with 6 out 7 returning with medals (2 Gold, 3 Silver and a Bronze) and 2 receiving Batsugun promotions.
Mel Pell was first up and saw Mel beat all 5 of her opponents by ippon (4 of them being higher grades), earning her the Gold medal and Batsugun promotion to 3rd Kyu (Green Belt).
Also in Mel's Group was Leah Wallace who had 5 fights and beat 4 of her opponents, only losing to Mel and picking up a well deserved Silver for her efforts.
Maurice Pell was in a group of 21 judoka! a mixture of Orange, Green and one or two Yellow Belts. Maurice despatched his first 4 opponents by ippon, the fourth by a well executed strangle, before losing his fifth. The field was whittled down to six players and Maurice won his next fight putting him in the final against a green belt. Maurice fought well but couldn't defeat his final opponent, but earned himself a Silver medal and a Batsugun promotion to 3rd Kyu (Green Belt).
Jamie Potter was up next and won his first 3 fights by ippon to put himself in the final, but disappointed himself by running out of steam in the final fight and only picking up the Silver.
Paul Rand has to have broken a record of some description by winning his first fight in just 18 seconds, having thrown his opponent twice for wazari! his secongd fight took a bit longer and after 2 minutes he performed a magnificent Ura Nage to win by ippon. After winning his third fight by ippon, his final opponent (the eventual Gold medalist) fought him really hard and whilst trying to escape from a hold down managed to put himself into a strangle badly depleting his energy, and he lost this one, but received a hard fought bronze.
The 2nd Dan mat saw Tony Leroux go into action and despite some excellent efforts he was unable to achieve a medal placing.
Lastly, Dave Rand stepped up to take on the over 40 Dan grades and beat his first opponent (a 4th Dan) by Ippon and then went on to get a unanimous decision from the corner Judges and Referee in his last fight to earn himself the Gold medal.
Overall a fantastic day for Kitsune-Gari Judokwai and all those who took part should be proud of the way they fought and represented our Club.
